He was the man when i was in school. I didnt play BB but my buddies and me love to go watch him play. I would love to see a player like him from this area. Im not sure but i think he was taken in the MLB draft also but dont know if he played any. Just a great athlete that came from good ol SWVA.

    Re: Calvin Talford

Talford was probably the best pure athlete in SW Va. history he was All-State in four sports he could truly do anything on an athletic field. My cousin who played BB at Gate City had to guard Talford on night at GC and held him to 12 points, five dunks and two free throws. An amazing athlete and Castlewood's contribution to sports history in SW Va.

Calvin is a super nice guy as well. He did play a year or two with the Martinsville Phillies in the Appy League while at ETSU. I watched him throw down quite a few at ETSU. He also has a DVD out for sale right now, and I think this is part of it, highlighting his time in HS, college and pros overseas I believe.

I witnessed some of those dunks firsthand playing with Calvin at the Y in Bristol years ago. As great of an athlete as he was, he was always a super nice guy.

The crowds at those Castlewood games were incredible. I remember being packed like a sardine on the top row of the bleachers when GC played them one year. First time I had ever seen anyone dunk in a high school game.
